Syracuse Salt Co.: Bringing the Salt Industry Back to Syracuse

By: Adrianna Ladd & Meghan McKeen

David and Libby Iannicello, a father-daughter team and owners of Syracuse Salt Co., first heard about the Salt City Market before the building was even constructed. They were eager to get on board and collaborate with the market in any way they could: “It’s Salt City [Syracuse], we’re trying to bring back part of that industry. So we called Adam [Sudmann] and said, ‘I don’t know how we can be part of what you’re doing here, but is there anything that we can do to be part of it?’” Adam, manager of the Salt City Market, was just as eager to highlight the great things happening in Syracuse. He envisions Salt City Market as, “a space for Syracuse to show itself off in all of its culture, glory, richness and grit.”

Salt City Market featured Syracuse Salt Co. in their teaching kitchen for a show and tell event on Wednesday, May 12th. It is evident that the visions of Syracuse Salt Co. and Salt City Market align–both hope to showcase what Syracuse has to offer. Considering this, it will likely not be the last time these businesses collaborate.

Although the father-daughter duo started the business, David’s father and sister are also part of it: “It’s a true family business.”

David is passionate about the history of salt in Syracuse and sharing this knowledge with others. “I’m not sure a lot of people understand how much the salt industry really influenced Syracuse in general, so I think that’s kind of interesting that we think about things like Salina Street and Solar Street and those are all roots of salt and the salt industry.”

Syracuse Salt Co. makes their own salt, a process that began by digging a well nearly 300 ft. deep from which clean water is evaporated. Salt is then extracted and tested for heavy metals and minerals. They offer various products such as Salt City Flake Salt, Himalayan Sea Salt, as well as other flavored salts.

Syracuse Salt Co. works with stores, spice producers, and restaurants. Their products are currently available in roughly 70 stores nationwide including locations in California, Montana, Mississippi, and Texas. When we asked David what he envisions for the Syracuse Salt Co. moving forward, his response was, “We hope that we get it across the whole country. We really want to be in as many restaurants as possible because we think it’s a really good product…we would love to be able to share our products and our story with pretty much everybody in the country.”
